**🌟 OurAVL.org – Responding to the Devastation of Hurricane Helene 🌟**

Hurricane Helene hit our community with an intensity we could never have imagined. The storm, which made landfall as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, brought record rainfall and devastating flooding to Asheville and the surrounding areas. With wind gusts reaching up to 106 mph in the mountains, Helene left much of the region without power, caused landslides, and isolated entire neighborhoods from essential resources. The French Broad River even crested at record-breaking levels, surpassing previous floods by over ten feet.

In just a few days, Asheville saw nearly 14 inches of rain, resulting in widespread damage. Roads were destroyed, including parts of I-40, and many residents were left without access to power, water, or communication. Floodwaters inundated areas like Biltmore Village and the River Arts District, leaving businesses and homes underwater. Over 700,000 people across North Carolina lost power, and countless families were forced to evacuate their homes.

💬 **Our Mission Right Now:**  

In response to this devastation, OurAVL.org is temporarily shifting focus from our Reparations work to address the immediate needs of those most affected by the storm. We are organizing wellness checks and delivering critical supplies to marginalized communities on the outskirts of Asheville—areas that have been cut off from many of the city’s resources.
